The Hot Potato of Healthcare

The debate is on, and change is in the air. It’s interesting we voted for change, and now we’re afraid of what’s going to happen. What do we know for sure? The current system is not working and costs are spinning out of control. What else do we know? There are options, but they appear to have a socialism taste that many don’t care for. I don’t have the answers, but I do have a perspective that may shed additional light on the subject. For 3 years, I resided across the border in Canada. The first thing I learned was for the most part Canadians are pleased with their system. It was apparent to me that they believed healthcare is central to family values. I was amazed with their approval of higher taxes that paid the cost of their system. Is it socialistic when you pay higher taxes to have healthcare for all citizens? As I travel the world, I’ve learned that there is a different way of thinking in other democratic countries. We have more choices, but we also appear to be driven more by greed. I do believe healthcare does need to change, and we better get it right. If we do, we open up all sorts of possibilities, including families staying together, decreases in bankruptcies, healthier workforces, increases in productivity and less stress, a leading cause of deteriorating health. The one thing I would like to see is a greater focus on wellness. How about rewarding people that attempt to live a healthier lifestyle? How much could we save if employers rewarded employees that made conscious efforts to diet and exercise? Please chime in…I would love to hear your input.
